About Our Business
Smartcards are generally used to provide high levels of security within an IT-based system, which can range from electronic payments (eg chip-and-PIN) , telecommunications (e.g. GSM), ID (e.g. NHS staff cards) and data storage (e.g. digital tachographs.) Unlike other forms of card-based storage media, the chips embedded in smartcards are self-contained computers complete with their own operating systems, firewalls and encryption keys, making them highly resistant to tampering and fraud. Various international standards cover the different types of smartcard, which include both 'contact' and 'contactless' cards, as well as hybrid cards featuring both technologies. These standards include ISO-7816, ISO-14443 and ISO-15639, as well as industry-specific standards such as GSM, EMV, PC/SC, and NFC.
